Of course, I wonder what would happen if you openly defaced a Tivo... they have a strong community as well... White Wolf fanatics too... although they are fanatical to each other, and never get to the outside world...
And they exist in the gay community too. I mean, lots of people have wished those and worse on Jerry Falwell. Hell, even Bush has gotten the bad attitude from many in our community.
Do I think they'd REALLY do that? No. It's flame mail. Which the media LOVES reporting on. :P
I mean, the guy in Chicago that caught the ball during the playoffs. I'm sure he got worse threats sent his way... and they probably actually meant it! Sports fans are even worse than Mac fans!
As a mac user I remember the sick feeling I had in my stomach when I read the original article about the calous person gutting his brand new G5 to implant an, obviously, inferior bit gadgetry. Mac users are very religious about this sort of thing. The G5 represents a BIG leap in personal computing for a lot of people, just as the G4 did when it was first released. So many people LUST after that sort of technology and what galled most readers (extremist or not) was that this asshole would be so ignorant as to rip out the guts rather than take advantage of a good thing.
I'll be honest, even with Panther, my G4 350 is looking a bit long in the tooth.

Mac users to the computer world as homosexuals (out ones) are to the general population.
We a small minority who kicked picked on all the time, so when someone openly attacks the community (even with a hoax), people tend to lash out hard.

Sure, the story was idiotic, and the respondents more so. Still, Macs are good, and they inspire a lot of loyalty.
Good God. Is everyone on drugs? Nipples, gay marriages, and G5 disebowelments.
