hm.....well, alcohol was involved. but that's no excuse. and a distinction must be made. did the boyfriend try to HIDE the fact, or was he honest and did he admit it happened?
if it were my boyfriend, and he got together with his ex and his ex's new boyfriend, I'd officially call it cheating either way, and I'd raise holy hell. *shrug* but you know me and monogamy....some people would understand, as long as the boyfriend was honest and up front about it.
however, if my boyfriend were to, say, before hand, have a conversation with me saying "you know, I still hold a flame for him, and his new bf is hot, I can't guarantee I'll be faithful, but just know I'm coming back to you..." that would be a different story, and yeah, I might be a little more understanding.
I'm guessing the parties involved didn't have this conversation.
